C9-Go8 博士论坛 2013: 可持续健康未来
The fourth annual C9-Go8 PhD Forum, jointly developed by the Consortium of China Nine Universities (C9) and Group of Eight (Go8), was successfully held on 21 -24 October, 2013 at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in Shanghai, China. During the 2013 Forum, the Deans of Graduate Studies from the Go8 and C9 groups also held their joint annual meeting.
The theme of this year’s PhD Forum was “Sustainable Health Futures” and as with the themes over the previous three years (of “Climate”, “Energy”, and “Water Management”) provided ample opportunity for cross disciplinary discussions drawing upon science, technology, the social sciences and the humanities.
During the forum over 50 research students and faculty members from the C9 and Go8 universities participated in the event. A number of prestigious researchers from the areas of health policy and economics, environmental health, and life sciences delivered keynote speeches and chaired discussion panels.
The student participants presented their research and exchanged questions on a broad range of topics, including pharmaceutical data protection and public health, computer diagnostic systems, drug therapy reform, social support for chronic diseases, regional public health services, cancer metabolism, stem cell tourism, the obesity epidemic, community wellbeing indicators, and vaccines in society. Some other interesting talks included the art of eating, future regenerative medicine and boosting body healing power, technological innovations within psychiatric care, and laser-tissue interaction in human skin.
The annual C9-Go8 PhD Forum has created an interactive platform for Chinese and Australian research students from various academic fields to exchange their experiences and ideas and to connect with each other face to face. It also provides an excellent opportunity for them to raise their awareness of global challenges and enhance their inter-disciplinary research, innovation, communication and leadership skills.
“Participating students have found the C9-Go8 PhD conferences extremely valuable and beneficial for them at the academic, professional, and personal levels”, said Professor Du Zhaohui, SJTU Executive Dean of Graduate Studies and Chair of the 2013 Forum. “By bringing faculties, professors and students together and encouraging more research dialogues, the annual C9-Go8 PhD Forums will foster and facilitate potential joint PhDs between the Go8 and C9 members.”
The conference successfully concluded with a group tour to Wuzhen, a well-known historic scenic town 150 kilometres from Shanghai.
The next Go8-C9 PhD Forum will be held at Sydney in the end of 2014.
