Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grants, which indicate strong relationships with the nation’s industry and excellence in delivering research with real impact, are much sought after and received with pride.
“The Group of Eight (Go8) Australia’s leading research-intensive universities is therefore proud it is the recipient of 75.6 per cent of the $9,170,965 ARC funding announced today. This equates to funding for 15 of the 22 projects announced by ARC,” says Vicki Thomson Go8 Chief Executive.
“UNSW received funding for nine projects, the highest of any university,” said Ms Thomson, “and we congratulate them.
“The Go8 welcomes every opportunity to showcase the strength of its research relationships with industry and at the same time to reaffirm its commitment to research which delivers impact. This is one such opportunity. The Go8 also leads, by far, the sector in industry funding for research – at twice the rest of the sector combined”, she said.
Ms Thomson said the nation would benefit greatly from the Go8 projects to be funded which include:
· innovative imaging technologies for advanced biomedical imaging research with a particular emphasis in healthy ageing (Monash – partners include Siemens)
· an Australian storm wave damage and beach erosion early warning system. (UNSW – partners include Bureau of Meteorology and US Geological Survey)
· emulsive explosives to blast rock in extreme geothermal environments (USyd with Dyno Nobel Asia Pacific Pty Ltd)
· athletic footwear to reduce knee loads in girls and women (UniMelb with ASICS Oceania Pty Ltd)
“We hope that such funding announcements can bring home to the community that University research is for its benefit,” she said
