Go8 Statement: Government’s review of the demand driven system

March 11, 2014

11 MARCH 2014

Responding to the Government’s review of the demand driven system, the Group of Eight has made a series of suggestions about options to secure the long-term future of university education in Australia, to provide access to students from lower socioeconomic, rural and regional backgrounds, and better fund research.

“There needs to be a debate in Australia about how we make sure universities have enough funding to provide the best possible education to as many Australians as possible,” said Go8 executive director, Michael Gallagher.

“One of the options canvassed by the Group of Eight which was also included in the submission by the Innovative Research Universities (IRU) was that universities should have the option of charging fees and foregoing Commonwealth funding per student for a particular course. This is in line with Recommendation 35 of the Bradley Review of Higher Education in 2008.”
