Today’s release of the Australian Medical Research Innovation five-year strategy and two-year priorities is strongly welcomed by the Group of Eight (Go8).
Go8 Chief Executive, Vicki Thomson, said that the strategy and priorities prepared by the Medical Research Advisory Board (MRAB), Chaired by Professor Ian Frazer, are critical to the success of the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).
“The Go8 invests over $2 billion in Health and Medical Research each year and undertakes around 60% of vital public research funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). We have a first-hand understanding of not only the importance of funding for medical research but also the necessity of managing funding in a strategic way to address national priorities.
“It is particularly pleasing that the Strategy notes the critical connection between medical research and the Government’s innovation agenda, the need for a whole of government approach to address the issue of research costing and the need for an ‘ongoing coordinated and integrated approach across Government, industry and health.’”
Australia’s research policy framework must be underpinned by long term policy and funding certainty and the Medical Research Innovation five-year strategy recognises this.
“The Go8 looks forward to continuing to work with the MRAB and the Government to ensure that the MRFF makes a significant contribution to the health and well-being of all Australians.”
