Go8 Chief Executive Vicki Thomson said Mr McClaran had led the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) in the UK since 2009, and the Australian higher education sector could learn much from his deep experience in regulation and quality assurance in the larger, more complex and more diverse UK system.
“We congratulate Mr McClaran on his appointment and we look forward to working cooperatively with him,” she said. “TEQSA now has a complete senior leadership team to take the agency forward. A risk-based national regulator is a vital part of the policy framework of Australian higher education, and TEQSA shows that Australia takes quality seriously and acts effectively when standards are infringed.”
Ms Thomson said that new leadership coupled with the lessons of the UK experience would strengthen TEQSA’s vital role in maintaining quality as higher education expands further beyond the university sector.
